Why 'The Crown' Star Claire Foy Quit Caffeine: Her Shocking Health Battle Revealed (2026)

The star of ‘The Crown’ has unveiled a shocking and rather "disgusting" reason for her decision to steer clear of caffeine.

Claire Foy, at the age of 41, made an appearance on the Table Manners podcast, where she discussed various topics, including her career journey, aspirations for future roles in musicals, and her beverage preferences. During the conversation, Foy revealed that she has been avoiding caffeinated drinks for several years, following a troubling experience in Morocco where she contracted "stomach parasites."

Foy, who is widely recognized for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the initial two seasons of Netflix's acclaimed series The Crown, suspects that she picked up a parasite during her travels in Morocco. This health issue lingered for at least five years, leading her to undergo numerous medical tests because she was inexplicably losing weight despite her constant appetite and willingness to eat a variety of foods.

"I was losing weight, and I had no idea why. They often come in pairs, you know. The doctor described it as gross, absolutely rank—it's disgusting," she candidly shared. In her effort to combat this issue, part of her strategy included cutting out caffeine entirely.

"I wasn’t keen on resorting to strong antibiotics," she explained, indicating that avoiding caffeine became a more appealing option. Before her health complications arose, she used to indulge in around 15 cups of tea and two coffees every day.

In addition to this, Foy spoke about her meticulous approach to her diet, which she manages due to an autoimmune condition. "I actually don’t consume gluten or sugar... unless I’m dining out. It doesn’t seem to affect me," she clarified. "It’s really about taking care of my autoimmune condition, as I need to avoid anything that might increase inflammation."

Foy's outstanding performance as Queen Elizabeth II earned her two Primetime Emmy awards and a Golden Globe, solidifying her reputation as a talented actress. Beyond her role in The Crown, she has also appeared in notable films such as 2022's Women Talking, 2023's All of Us Strangers, and the upcoming H Is for Hawk set to release in 2025.

Throughout her life, the actress has been candid about her various health challenges. Just last month, she expressed to the Sunday Times that reaching 40 felt like an unexpected milestone for her. "I’ve faced numerous medical issues over the years," she admitted. "But here I am. Someone once remarked, ‘You know, most people live?’—implying that many individuals enjoy long and fulfilling lives. Although life isn’t always perfect, it’s reassuring to remember that the human instinct is to survive. That’s a comforting thought."
