Get ready for an intense and thrilling finale! The Lake Murray fishing tournament is about to reach its climax, and it's a battle that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
A Championship Showdown
The Columbia PFG College Fishing circuit has become a reliable showcase of intense competition. With five out of the last seven championships decided by less than a pound and a half, including three by a mere ounce, this tournament is a true test of skill and strategy.
And the 2026 College Fishing National Championship on Lake Murray is no exception. After two days of intense fishing, the battle royale is set to continue, with an exciting lineup of teams ready to fight for the title.
Leading the Pack
Stepping into the lead are the dynamic duo from LSU-Shreveport, Levi Thibodaux and Miles Smith. Their impressive catch of 21 pounds and 15 ounces on Friday, added to their Day 1 weight of 26 pounds and 3 ounces, gives them a commanding two-day total of 48 pounds and 2 ounces. But they're not alone at the top.
Hot on their heels are Matthew Dettling and Cody Domingos from the University of Tennessee, who jumped to second place with a weight of 47 pounds and 11 ounces. Matthew Knopp and Logan Russell of Lander University are close behind with 47 pounds, followed by the Carson-Newman University team of Zach Wolfe and Brayden Druckman at 46 pounds and 13 ounces. Completing the top five are James Dubose and Dylan Milam of Montevallo University with 46 pounds and 12 ounces.
And here's where it gets controversial... the defending national champions, Peyton Sorrow and Brody Robison of Montevallo, are still in the mix, finishing Day 2 with 46 pounds and 11 ounces. This means six teams are within striking distance of the lead, separated by just over 2 pounds.
A Tale of Adaptation
Thibodaux and Smith have an interesting story. Despite being raised in the shallow waters of southeast Louisiana, Lake Murray was a new adventure for them. With very little prior knowledge, they practiced and learned on the fly, adapting their strategies throughout the week.
"It's been a learning curve," Thibodaux shared. "We had to figure out what worked best for us on this lake, and we're happy with how it's going so far."
Smith added, "Lake Murray is a healthy fishery with plenty of life. Our areas have an abundance of gizzard shad and threadfin shad, which sets up well for our style of fishing."
The Final Day Strategy
With a tight race on their hands, Thibodaux and Smith are aiming to maintain their lead and potentially bridge the gap between their Day 1 and Day 2 weights. They know the big fish are out there, and they're confident in their abilities.
"We're feeling good about our chances," Thibodaux said. "If we can bring in a weight over 23 pounds, I think we'll have a really strong shot at the win."
So, who will emerge victorious? Will Thibodaux and Smith hold their ground, or will one of the other top teams steal the title? Find out as the final day unfolds on Lake Murray.
And this is the part most people miss... it's not just about the weight of the fish. It's about the strategy, the adaptation, and the sheer determination of these young anglers. So, who do you think will take the crown? Let's discuss in the comments!
