Sydney's Historic Ships Face Uncertain Future as Rezoning Looms
The fate of some of Australia's oldest ships hangs in the balance as harbour leases expire and development pressures intensify. Sydney Heritage Fleet, responsible for maintaining and restoring Sydney's oldest marine vessels, faces a critical challenge. Their lease on government-owned land at Rozelle shipyard is set to expire in 2028, and the organization's future is uncertain due to the potential acquisition of the land for the Bays West transport-oriented development (TOD) rezoning.
Vice-president Brett Smith expresses concern, stating that there's nowhere else in Sydney that could accommodate the entire fleet. The fleet includes iconic vessels like the James Craig tall ship (built in 1884), the John Oxley steamship (1927), and the Kanangra Sydney ferry (1912).
The Bays West TOD rezoning plan, which includes new homes within 1,200 meters of the future Bays Metro station, is a subject of review by the state's Cabinet Office. The plan's delay in being made public, initially set for 2025, has raised further concerns. Moving the working port for housing, as proposed, could significantly increase repair and maintenance costs in Sydney Harbour, according to Mr. Smith.
Marine companies at Rozelle Bay, with leases until 2028, share the uncertainty. Clement Marine Constructions' director, Richard Oppedisano, questions the ability to continue emergency work on ferry wharves, citing time constraints for equipment delivery. Polaris Marine, a maintenance contractor for Transport for NSW, also highlights the lack of alternative sites in the harbour, making the relocation to Port Botany or Port Kembla impractical.
The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure's spokesperson acknowledges the ongoing review by the Cabinet Office, emphasizing the need to balance housing and working port uses. The spokesperson assures that no decisions have been made, and the government will provide updates once the review is complete.
