A 31-year-old man faces 11 charges after a tragic crash that claimed the lives of two elderly women during a police pursuit in Sydney's southwest. The pursuit began when police were alerted to a stolen car on King Georges Road in South Hurstville. The suspect's vehicle was spotted and a chase ensued, involving PolAir, along the M5 Motorway. The pursuit ended abruptly in Bankstown, where the suspect's car crashed into an Alfa Romeo on the Old Hume Highway in Camden South. The two occupants of the Alfa Romeo, aged 60 and 84, tragically lost their lives at the scene. The driver of the stolen car fled but was eventually arrested and taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing. He now faces serious charges, including dangerous driving causing death, escaping police, and driving recklessly. The incident has sparked a critical investigation, with police declaring a critical incident and the Professional Standards Command reviewing the circumstances. The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) will oversee this review, ensuring a thorough examination of the events leading up to the fatal crash.
