Four South African teens have claimed top honors at the World Innovative Science Project (WISP) Olympiad in Bali, Indonesia. The international expo, held from December 10th to 13th, showcased young innovators' groundbreaking projects in fields like sustainable agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Organized by the Indonesian Scientific Society, the competition brought together global talent to exhibit cutting-edge research and practical solutions. The success of the South African delegation has firmly placed the nation on the global map for youth-led scientific research. Among the top achievers was Albertus Willem, a Grade 10 learner from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. Willem earned both a gold medal and the prestigious Grand Award for his innovative research into sustainable farming. His project explores the efficacy of lavender oil as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fungicides, specifically aimed at supporting citrus farmers in reducing their environmental footprint.
