In certain states, like Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, gas prices exhibit a distinct pattern known as price cycling. Prices sharply "reset" on specific days and then gradually decline until the next spike.
For example, in Ohio, the best savings can be found 5 to 7 days after a price jump, when competition drives prices down. The difference between buying at the peak and near the bottom of a cycle can be substantial, ranging from 15 to 45 cents per gallon!
De Haan adds that Ohio drivers are fortunate with new gas stations like Sheetz and Wawa entering the market. These newcomers force established stations to keep prices competitive, offering savings regardless of your travel direction.
However, timing isn't the only strategy. Shopping around can also save you 5 to 10 cents per gallon.
