PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian men’s badminton squad surged into the SEA Games final with a decisive 3-1 win over the host nation in Bangkok, signaling their intent to reclaim the crown. This result mirrors their performance two years ago in Cambodia, where they also finished with silver after falling to Indonesia. The win sets up a highly anticipated final clash against Indonesia on Wednesday.
Thailand provided a stiff early test as former world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn steamrolled Leong Jun Hao 21-15, 21-15 to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the early going.
Australia World No 2 doubles duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik leveled the scoreboard for Malaysia, knocking off Supak Jomkoh and Peeratchai Sukphun 21-18, 21-19.
In the second singles, Malaysia’s Justin Hoh impressed by overpowering Thailand’s No. 2, Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul, 21-15, 21-17 to place Malaysia ahead 2-1.
The decisive point came from the men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun. While they led comfortably in the first game against Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul, they faced a tense turnaround in the second and ultimately forced a deciding game. Demonstrating composure under pressure, Wei Chong and Kai Wun sealed the match 21-14, 18-21, 21-17, securing the victory for Malaysia.
And this sets the stage for a potentially dramatic final against Indonesia, with both teams chasing the SEA Games gold after Indonesia defeated Malaysia in the previous edition. The clash promises high-quality rallies and tactical masterclasses, as Malaysia seeks to overturn last edition’s heartbreak and Indonesian players aim to defend their title.
