Lilly Singh, the charismatic podcaster and former social media sensation, is currently in Mumbai, immersing herself in the vibrant world of Bollywood. Her podcast, 'Shameless', offers an intimate look at her experiences as she navigates the city's rich culture and connects with its iconic stars.
Despite her previous visits, Lilly admits that Mumbai continues to captivate her with its unique charm. She shares, "I'm still learning. It's a city of surprises. People told me it's hard to confirm plans. ‘Tension mat lo, things will happen.’ As a meticulous planner, I had to embrace flexibility. That's when I discovered 'jugaad'. I even encourage my team in Los Angeles to embrace it, pretending they're in Mumbai and making the most of it."
One of Lilly's most memorable experiences was being hosted by the legendary Shah Rukh Khan at his iconic residence, Mannat. As a lifelong fan who has "manifested SRK energy", she describes that day as one of the most extraordinary moments of her life. "It was incredible to be hosted at Mannat. That's why I wore an SRK shirt when I arrived. Interestingly, every time I'm in Mumbai, the rickshaw drivers point out 'Madam, that's Shah Rukh Khan's house.' I smile and nod, of course, without revealing my connection to the Khan family. I met his parents, had lunch, and even received one of his blazers, a cherished memento."
Lilly's passion extends beyond her podcast; she's dedicated to promoting South Asian representation in Hollywood. However, she acknowledges that progress has been challenging. "We were making strides, but now we're taking a few steps back. The silver lining is that when I moved to LA, it was challenging to invite other South Asians. Now, I host an annual Diwali party filled with Hollywood desis. Unfortunately, this doesn't make it easier to create content. There aren't enough roles for us. My last film was independently financed, emphasizing the importance of being the producer and decision-maker. When you don't have a major studio backing, you must invest your own money. Budgets don't always guarantee the best vision. I'm working towards securing a substantial budget."
Balancing acting, writing, and producing proves demanding for Lilly. She prefers acting and writing but finds producing less appealing. She highlights the cultural and linguistic challenges in LA, where the crew may not share her background. "The difference between working in LA and India is that everyone understands the culture and landscape. In LA, the crew often doesn't look like me. This can lead to misunderstandings, as the person making props or editing may not grasp the culture. During my late-night show hosting, producers would email me, asking for translations of Hindi words. It's frustrating when a simple Google search could clarify. This takes time and energy away from other tasks."
Lilly's insights offer a glimpse into the complexities of the entertainment industry, inviting us to ponder the challenges faced by those striving for representation and success.
