Jaylen Brown is making a compelling case for greater equity opportunities for NBA players, emphasizing that they should have the chance to build financial stakes similar to team owners. According to a report by Ryan & Lovinger from Bloomberg News, Brown pointed out that the current labor regulations in the NBA are not keeping pace with the immense wealth generated by the league. The valuations of NBA franchises are reaching astronomical figures, often exceeding billions of dollars.
In his remarks, Brown drew an interesting parallel between NBA players and high-ranking executives at major corporations, stating that employees at firms like Apple or Nike frequently receive equity as part of their compensation for years of dedicated service. He believes that professional athletes deserve similar recognition and rewards. "The sweat equity that you put in, you get compensated for doing your job, but you don’t get compensated for the growth. In major corporations and companies, you do. I think players should be able to invest alongside ownership groups," he said.
Currently, Brown serves as the Vice President on the Executive Committee of the NBA Players Association (NBPA) and has been actively involved with the union since 2019. The NBPA recently negotiated a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with team owners in 2023, which will remain in effect until the end of the 2029–30 season. This agreement permits players to hold limited stakes in publicly traded companies associated with NBA ownership but imposes significant restrictions on direct investments in the teams themselves.
Throughout his career, Brown has been a vocal advocate against inequalities and racism, using his platform to address these critical issues. He has also encouraged players to take more control over how they are represented in the media and to feel empowered to speak out on matters that resonate with them.
