COPD Awareness: Uncovering the 'Cinderella' Disease (2026)

COPD: Unveiling the Hidden Killer - A Media Campaign for Awareness

COPD, a silent epidemic, claims millions of lives annually, yet it remains in the shadows. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a devastating condition, ranking as the third-leading cause of death worldwide. Despite its staggering death toll, COPD is often overlooked, underfunded, and misunderstood. Imagine a plane crashing every hour, killing 400 people, and this is the reality of COPD's impact.

This year's World COPD Day theme, 'Short of breath, think COPD', emphasizes the everyday struggles of those affected: persistent cough, breathlessness, wheezing, and fatigue. The goal is to encourage early detection and effective management, which can significantly improve symptoms and lung function, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients. But here's the catch: How can we raise awareness for a disease that's rarely in the spotlight?

Media coverage plays a pivotal role in shaping public understanding of health issues. Mr. José Castro, WHO Director-General's Special Envoy for Chronic Respiratory Diseases, is taking a stand. He believes that COPD is a 'Cinderella' disease, neglected and hidden from view. In collaboration with the Pace University Center for Global Health and WHO experts, Mr. Castro is leading workshops for journalists to shed light on this overlooked crisis. These workshops aim to educate health reporters about the far-reaching consequences of COPD on individuals, families, and society as a whole.

The recent workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, brought together journalists from across South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. Emalin Zalani, a Malaysian journalist, shared her eye-opening experience: "I was unaware of COPD's significance until this workshop. It's not just about cancer and heart diseases; COPD's hidden burden is immense." The workshop's impact is evident, with journalists from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand publishing COPD-related stories in prominent national outlets, just in time for World COPD Day.

Building on this success, a previous workshop in Mexico City inspired increased media coverage in Central and South America. The initiative's reach will expand further with upcoming workshops in Africa and Europe, starting in Cape Town, South Africa, in March 2026.

COPD's story is one that needs to be told. By bringing it to the forefront of media attention, we can ensure that this deadly disease receives the recognition and resources it demands. But will this strategy be enough to make a lasting impact? Share your thoughts on how we can keep the conversation going and bring COPD out of the shadows.
