Activision has announced a significant strategic shift for the Call of Duty series, which will impact the franchise for years to come. The company has decided to stop releasing back-to-back entries in the same sub-series, such as Black Ops and Modern Warfare. This decision comes after the less-than-stellar response to Black Ops 7.
"We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games," Activision stated in their official announcement. "The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year."
Activision also promised "meaningful, not incremental" innovation for the series' future, but did not specify what this would mean. Instead, they stressed that they would share more "when the time is right."
Black Ops 7 will still receive seasonal support, and Activision is committed to making it one of the best Black Ops games ever made. The multiplayer and Zombies modes will be available via a free trial next week, which will coincide with a Double XP weekend.
Despite the challenges, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has received mixed reviews, with a score of 67 on Metacritic. This makes it one of the lowest-scoring games in the entire series. The question remains: will this strategic shift be enough to revitalize the franchise and provide a unique experience for players each year?
