A startling global meta-analysis reveals that one-third of hospital infections are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a grave threat to patient health. The study, led by the University of Leicester, highlights a 58% higher risk of death for patients with resistant infections, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship in hospitals, especially in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. The findings, published in a renowned medical journal, are based on a comprehensive analysis of data from 34 hospital studies across 18 countries, involving 20,658 patients. The research team discovered that over 36.5% of hospital-acquired infections were caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with bloodstream infections posing the highest mortality risk.
