Imagine this: a brief 90 seconds that encapsulate the essence of comedy in one of America’s most cherished television series. This is how each episode of the hit ABC show, Abbott Elementary, kicks off with what’s known as a "cold open," a segment that stands apart from the main storyline, yet captivates the audience immediately.
Chris Perfetti, a talented actor who portrays Jacob, a sixth-grade history teacher, recently shared insights about these delightful scenes on Obsessed: The Podcast, hosted by Kevin Fallon. He described these openings as opportunities for the show to embrace a "speed of fun," allowing the primary cast to shine together in comedic moments that truly resonate with viewers.
One of Perfetti's memorable cold opens features Gregory, played by Tyler James Williams, making a grand entrance into the teachers’ lounge wearing a hat that humorously resembles something straight out of Indiana Jones. The reactions from his fellow teachers are priceless, as they hilariously critique his choice, showcasing their camaraderie and wit.
In another standout moment from Season 2, there’s a charming mix-up involving Barbara, an older teacher portrayed by Sheryl Lee Ralph. She humorously confuses well-known Black and white celebrities, mistaking Carrie Underwood for Kerry Washington and Will Ferrell for Will Smith. This bit of humor struck such a chord with both fans and creators alike that it has evolved into a beloved recurring joke throughout the series, which Perfetti dubbed a "gift that keeps on giving." He assured listeners, "We show no signs of slowing on that."
Now entering its fifth season, Abbott Elementary continues to air on ABC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day. Perfetti took a moment to address some playful tension between himself and the show’s creator, Quinta Brunson, which surfaced when she made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in December. During the show, Brunson praised Perfetti and his co-star Janelle James for their nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, stating, "He doesn’t think about awards or nominations—he only cares about acting. He’s exactly the kind of person you want to see succeed."
Kimmel lightheartedly compared this sentiment to wanting to see someone who can’t drive win a car, prompting Perfetti to share the clip with his followers on Instagram, humorously urging them not to heed Brunson’s words and labeling himself as "a menace who lives on external validation."
In a lighthearted exchange with Fallon, Perfetti jokingly remarked that their relationship was quite "contentious," insisting, "We’re not on speaking terms currently. She knows she needs me, so we’re working on it." However, he softened his tone, acknowledging Brunson’s immense talent, stating, "To know Quinta Brunson is to love her. She’s unbelievably talented, and it’s hard to believe she’s as generous and kind as she is, especially after all that stuff she said about me on Kimmel."
While Perfetti did not take home a Critics’ Choice Award, which went to Ike Barinholtz for The Studio, his co-star James celebrated her victory. Reflecting on his own school days, Perfetti described himself as a "menace" even back then, revealing, "I think my artist's brain was locked in from a young age, which made me a challenging student. I annoyed quite a few teachers."
As for the character he plays, Perfetti expressed excitement about what’s in store for Jacob this season, particularly noting his character’s gay identity. He emphasized the importance of portraying Jacob as a well-rounded individual, stating, "From the beginning, it was crucial to present a fully developed character without making his sexuality the sole focus of who he is."
Perfetti reflected on how many sitcoms often reduce their LGBTQ+ characters to mere stereotypes, declaring, "It’s a beautiful gift to be represented by a fully formed, flawed character that resonates with your experiences. That’s what we strive for in our storytelling."
