A Christmas Carol VR: Agile Lens' Haunting Holiday Tradition (2026)

A Christmas Carol: A Haunting VR Experience

Get ready for a chilling adventure as Ebenezer Scrooge encounters his fate in a unique virtual reality experience. On December 21, 2025, the classic tale of 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens will come to life in a way you've never imagined. Disembodied spirits, captured with cutting-edge technology, will haunt Scrooge, played by the talented Ari Tarr, in a Quest 2 or newer headset. But this is just the beginning of a groundbreaking project.

The Agile Lens team has been working tirelessly to bring this story to life in virtual reality. Since 2021, they've been crafting an experimental VR adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' (available at https://www.xmascarolvr.com/?ref=uploadvr.com), utilizing Unreal's MetaHuman avatars and the latest capture and streaming technologies. Their goal? To record every detail of the live show, including mocap, show cues, audio, and even audience interactions. This level of immersion is made possible by their innovative tool, 'Stage Presence', designed for future VR theater productions.

"We finally achieved one of our biggest goals this holiday season: capturing everything that happens during a live show," shared architect and producer Alex Coulombe. "We can now replay the performance on demand, providing an unforgettable experience for viewers."

The VR adaptation will be available for free on Quest 2 or newer headsets, with live showings from Friday to Sunday. The performance features Ari Tarr as Dickens and Scrooge, and Debbie Deer as the ghosts, all wearing Quest Pro headsets for realistic face and body capture. During the VR experience, you'll become a ghost yourself, visible to Scrooge as a guiding spirit, helping him reflect on his past actions.

Kevin Laibson, a producer on the project, expressed his pride and excitement, stating, 'You can't go wrong with a Christmas Carol; it's a timeless story that everyone loves.'

Agile Lens plans to continue their VR theater experiments, with a focus on combining mixed reality and virtual reality techniques. They aim to create a modular toolkit, 'Stage Presence', to cater to a wide range of live XR productions, making theater more accessible and engaging for audiences worldwide.

The future of VR theater is an exciting prospect, and Agile Lens is at the forefront of this innovation. With their Stage Presence tool, they're pushing the boundaries of what's possible, offering a unique and immersive experience that will leave audiences captivated. Stay tuned for more groundbreaking VR theater adventures!
